Police cleared a protest in Hamburg using water cannon in the early hours of Sunday morning. The anti-capitalist protesters, who had gathered for a rally ahead of Labour Day, were soaked by high powered jets of the water from the cannon in the district of Schanzenviertel. The protesters then moved on to the Osterstrasse district of the city, where shops and bank windows were smashed. Cars were set on fire across the city. It was not clear how many people were detained or arrested or if there were any injuries. Labour Day, also known as May Day, is marked in many countries around the world on 1 May, when workers hold marches and rallies to demand greater workers rights and improved working conditions.
